Farmers’ Interests Non-Negotiable In India–US Trade Deal: Agriculture Minister

ENA Sectors 2026-02-06 15:12:54 New Delhi, Feb 6 (KNN) Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday said the proposed India US trade deal fully safeguards Indias agricultural interests, including those of farmers and the dairy sector, amid criticism from opposition parties. Chouhan said, The deal reflects a new benchmark of diplomacy, development and dignity, with the Prime Minister making it clear from the outset that farmers interests are non-negotiable. Addressing the media in Delhi, Chouhan emphasised, Indias staple grains, fruits, major crops, millets, and dairy products remain completely secure and face no threat whatsoever. The interests of small and large farmers alike have been fully protected, and the agreement will create fresh opportunities rather than risks for Indian agriculture. No Sudden Market Opening: Government On concerns that small farmers could be affected due to Indias heavy dependence on agriculture, the minister said there would be no sudden or disruptive entry of foreign agricultural products into the domestic market. He added, No market segment has been opened in a manner that could harm Indian farmers, and all major crops, food grains, fruits and dairy products remain shielded. Responding to claims sparked by a recent statement from a US official on greater access for American farm products, Chouhan said Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has already clarified the issue in Parliament. He reiterated that India has not agreed to any provisions that would place pressure on domestic agriculture. Export Opportunities Highlighted The minister said the trade deal could expand export opportunities for Indian products, particularly rice, spices and textiles. He noted that India already exports rice to several countries, including the US, with recent exports valued at around Rs 63,000 crore. He noted, Reduced tariffs will directly benefit Indias rice, spices and textile exports, and that growth in textile exports will help millions of cotton-growing farmers. Parliamentary Disclosure On the oppositions demand for a detailed discussion in Parliament, Chouhan said the government would share the full details of the agreement in due course. He maintained that the central principle of the deal is the protection of farmers interests.
