Bureau Of Energy Efficiency Celebrates 25th Foundation Day

ENA Sectors 2026-03-02 12:54:48 New Delhi, Mar 2 (KNN) The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, marked its 25th Fondation Day in New Delhi on March 1, with the agency reaffirming its resolve to promote energy efficiency. Energy Efficiency as a Preventive Strategy Addressing the gathering, Manohar Lal Khattar, Cabinet Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, said BEE acts as a preventive institution for the power sector. He noted that every unit of electricity conserved reduces the need for additional generation capacity and lowers emissions, thereby protecting the environment and ensuring a sustainable future. He highlighted Indias progress in climate commitments, stating that the country has reduced the emissions intensity of its GDP by 36 per cent from 2005 levels and achieved 52 per cent non-fossil fuel installed capacity ahead of the 2030 target. The Minister outlined key achievements under major BEE initiatives, including the Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO), the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme, and the transition to the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS). The achievements also included Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms, the ADEETIE scheme for MSMEs, the Standards & Labelling (S&L) Programme, the Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC), and transport sector efficiency measures. He underscored the importance of energy efficiency in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, while drawing attention to emerging areas such as data centres and Artificial Intelligence that require efficient and sustainable energy management solutions. Energy Efficiency as Indias First Fuel In his address, Secretary (Power) Pankaj Agarwal described energy efficiency as Indias First Fuel and a crucial tool for balancing energy security, affordability and sustainability. He spoke about BEEs initiatives in cooling efficiency through the S&L Programme and ECSBC, industrial decarbonisation through the carbon market and ADEETIE scheme, establishment of energy efficiency hubs and fuel efficiency improvements in the transport sector. Launch of BEE@25 Logo and Digital Initiatives On the occasion, the BEE@25 commemorative logo was formally released, symbolising energy efficiency, sustainability and forward-looking innovation. The RCO Portal was also unveiled to strengthen monitoring, facilitate compliance and enhance coordination among stakeholders. The portal is expected to improve transparency, reporting and data-driven decision-making. Additionally, the Minister launched the BEE Star Label Mobile Application, developed in collaboration with CLASP. It enables consumers to scan QR codes on star-labelled appliances to access verified product information, including energy performance, model details and compliance status. This promotes informed purchasing decisions and strengthens the credibility of the Standards & Labelling Programme. The event reaffirmed BEEs commitment to promoting energy efficiency as a driver of sustainable growth, national energy security and environmental responsibility, aligned with the vision of a Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat. The Ministry of Power had last year nominated the Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME) as a member of the Governing Council of BEE for a three-year term.
