Centre Approves Ad Hoc Kerosene Allocation To Ensure Fuel Supply Amid West Asia War

ENA Sectors 2026-03-30 12:58:06 New Delhi, Mar 30 (KNN) The Central Government has authorised an ad hoc allocation of Public Distribution System (PDS) Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO) to States and Union Territories to support household cooking and lighting needs, amid disruptions in global energy supplies linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict. The move includes allocation to 21 States and UTs that were previously declared kerosene-free, marking a temporary reversal aimed at ensuring energy security. Emergency Measures to Maintain Supply The decision follows a broader set of measures announced by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to sustain uninterrupted availability of petroleum products and LPG across the country, particularly in view of the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz. According to the ministry, all refineries are currently operating at high capacity with adequate crude inventories, while sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel are being maintained nationwide. Domestic LPG production has also been increased to meet consumption requirements. Additional Allocation and Distribution Steps An additional allocation of 48,000 kilolitres of kerosene has been made over and above the regular supply for all States and UTs. Concerned authorities have been asked to identify distribution points at the district level to ensure effective delivery. So far, 17 States and UTs have issued SKO allocation orders, while Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh have indicated no requirement for kerosene. As part of the 60-day emergency measure, petrol pumps will be allowed to store and distribute limited quantities of SKO under relaxed norms. The government said 28 States and UTs have already issued orders for allocation of non-domestic LPG as per guidelines. In other regions, public sector oil marketing companies are supplying commercial LPG cylinders. Since March 14, 2026, a total of 39,368 metric tonnes of LPG has been lifted by commercial entities. Government Urges Public to Avoid Panic Buying The ministry noted that rumours had led to panic buying and crowding at some fuel retail outlets in certain states. However, it reiterated that adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are available across the country. The government has advised citizens not to rely on unverified information and has requested Chief Secretaries of all States and UTs to conduct daily press briefings and use media platforms to disseminate accurate updates. Currently, 14 States and UTs are undertaking such communication efforts. The temporary reintroduction of kerosene distribution underscores the governments focus on ensuring energy access and stability amid global supply uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.
