New Delhi, Apr 20 (KNN) The central government has approved a set of procurement measures covering potatoes in Uttar Pradesh, chana in Andhra Pradesh, and an extension of tur procurement in Karnataka.

The decisions, cleared by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are aimed at ensuring farmers receive remunerative prices and are protected from distress sales amid market volatility.

Potato Procurement Approved in Uttar Pradesh

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has approved the Uttar Pradesh governments proposal to procure potatoes under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for the 2025 26 agricultural year.

Under the scheme, 20 lakh metric tonnes of potatoes will be procured at a Market Intervention Price of Rs 6,500.9 per metric tonne. The Centres financial contribution is estimated at Rs 203.15 crore.

The move is expected to stabilise prices and support potato farmers by ensuring assured returns.

Chana Procurement Expanded in Andhra Pradesh

In Andhra Pradesh, the Centre has approved procurement of chana (Bengal gram) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).

The initial approval for 94,500 metric tonnes has been enhanced to a maximum limit of 1,13,250 metric tonnes following a request from the state government.

The revised procurement limit is expected to provide relief to farmers by enabling sales at assured prices and reducing the risk of distress selling.

Tur Procurement Extended in Karnataka

The government has also approved a 30-day extension for procurement of tur (pigeon pea) at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) under PSS in Karnataka for the Kharif 2025 26 season.

With the extension, procurement will continue until 15 May 2026, allowing more farmers to participate and benefit from MSP-based sales.

(KNN Bureau)
