ENA Global 2026-04-24 16:20:15 New Delhi, Apr 24 (KNN) The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has welcomed Japans decision to review its framework governing the transfer of defence equipment and technology, calling it a positive step for strengthening bilateral security ties. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told the media, India welcomes Japan's review of the three principles on the transfer of defence equipment and technology. Defence and security cooperation form an important pillar of the India-Japan special strategic and global partnership, as quoted by ANI. As part of the Joint Declaration on security cooperation between India and Japan, both sides have committed to increasing practical cooperation in the interest of their national security and continue economic dynamism, he added. Boost to Strategic and Industrial Cooperation Jaiswal highlighted that the revised framework could expand technological and industrial collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders, particularly in sectors critical to national security and resilience. Japan Expands Scope of Defence Exports On April 21, Japan announced amendments to its Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology, widening the scope of permissible exports. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the changes would allow, in principle, the transfer of a broader range of defence equipment, beyond the earlier limited categories such as rescue, transport, and surveillance. Safeguards and Strategic Intent Takaichi emphasised that exports would remain subject to strict case-by-case review, adherence to international norms, and end-use monitoring. Transfers will be limited to countries aligned with principles of the United Nations Charter. She reiterated Japans continued commitment to its post-war pacifist stance, even as it adopts a more flexible and strategic approach to defence cooperation.
