ENA Sectors 2026-05-04 16:51:16 <p><span style="font-size:14px"><strong>New Delhi, May 4 (KNN) </strong>Indian Railways has approved infrastructure projects worth Rs 895.30 crore aimed at enhancing metro rail capacity and strengthening critical bridge infrastructure to improve operational efficiency and safety.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">A major portion of the investment totalling Rs 671.72 crore has been allocated for power system upgradation of the North South Corridor of Kolkata Metro. The project includes the installation of seven new traction substations and the upgrade of existing systems from 11 kV to 33 kV to support higher train frequency.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The augmentation will enable a reduction in train headway from the current five minutes to 2.5 minutes, significantly increasing line capacity to meet rising passenger demand. The upgrade also addresses ageing infrastructure constraints, ensuring reliable power supply and improved service delivery.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">Separately, a Rs 223.58 crore project has been sanctioned for reconstruction of Bridge No. 520 in the Adra division under South Eastern Railway zone. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The bridge, located on the Madhukunda Damodar section, is a vital link connecting key industrial corridors, including the Asansol Tatanagar route.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The existing structure, originally built in the early 20th century, has shown signs of structural stress, necessitating substructure rebuilding and associated track and yard modifications. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The project is expected to enhance safety and reliability on a high-density freight route that supports coal movement and industrial logistics.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The bridge upgrade will also improve connectivity for industries in the Durgapur Asansol belt, including major steel, cement, and power units, thereby supporting regional economic activity.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px">The Railways said that approvals of new projects reflect a continued focus on capacity expansion, infrastructure modernisation, and operational resilience, as the national transporter seeks to meet growing passenger and freight demand while ensuring safe and efficient rail services.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px"><em><strong>(KNN Bureau)</strong></em></span><br /> </p> 46002 https://knnindia.co.in/news/newsdetails/sectors/indian-railways-approves-rs-895-crore-projects-for-metro-power-upgrade-and-bridge-modernisation 2026-05-04 16:51:16 knnindia.co.in
