New Telecom Policy to focus on domestic mfg, rely less on imports: Sundararajan

New Delhi, Sept 5 (KNN) Eyeing at strengthening the domestic manufacturing in the telecom sector, Aruna Sundararajan, Telecom Secretary said that the upcoming New Telecom Policy (NTP) will be focussing on procuring from the domestic manufacturers and move away from relying in imports.
The Secretary informed that the NTP is being formulated along the ambition of bringing in internet for all and also with special focus on Make in India project of the government.
With the current work in progress, the first draft of the new telecom policy is likely to be tabled by December later this year with the various stakeholders for consultations and feedback.
The new framework would also focus on manufacturing not only for the country but also for the overseas market including Africa and Middle East Asia.
The Secretary further said that despite huge potential in the domestic manufacturing, a lot of it remains underutilized.
Also there are considerations of incorporating product designs developed within India instead of reaching out the other countries for the same.
