The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Officer Incharge Rene Van Berkel spoke to KNN on the sidelines of the National Summit To Promote Energy Efficiency among the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)  held recently in the national capital.

Berkel discussed that the commercial viability of adopting energy efficient technologies by MSMEs is a factor that needs to be considered.

He said that energy efficiency is being divided into different tiers and first tier is which involves fixing lights and machinery does not require much investment. He added that the next tier being higher cost option involves the use of efficient technology and it not only reduces the cost but also makes machines efficient, increasing the production batches and additional net profit.

Answering the question of possibility of merging energy efficiency with India’s statutory pollution control requirement, the UNIDO representative said that the pollution control and energy efficiency should be ideally integrated but combining two is very complicated with lot of legalities involved.
