Mumbai, Jul 23 (KNN) Aadhaar card will become a single universal document for opening a bank account in India. Until now banks had been asking for "any other document" accepting a wide range of documents, including ration cards and utility bills for opening accounts.

RBI has now specified "officially valid documents" to be the Aadhaar card, voter ID card, permanent account number (PAN) card, driving licence, passport, or the NREGA card.

“Indian Agents are advised that physical Aadhaar card/ letter issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) containing details of name, address and Aadhaar number may be accepted as an ‘Officially Valid Document’. If the address provided by the customer is same as that on the Aadhaar letter, it may be accepted as a proof of both identity and address,” RBI has said in a release.

In a circular addressed to banks last week, the RBI said that it has revised its "know your customer" guidelines with the government's prevention of money laundering norms.  (KNN/SD)
