Britannia plans to set up second greenfield unit in Bengal

Kolkata, Aug 10 (KNN) The Britannia Industries of Wadia Group has announced its plan to set up a greenfield unit – its second in the state – by 2018.

The move is likely to get businesses for the MSME sector as well who are the suppliers to the large units.

The companies like Britannia buy flour (maida), sugar etc from the small mills.

The company is looking for a greenfield manufacturing unit in the State as the demand for its products is growing, Mamata Banerjee led AITC said in a statement.

Britannia currently has only one manufacturing unit in Taratala, which is one of the oldest units of the biscuit giant.

The company plans to invest Rs 100-150 crore in the new plant.

Earlier this week, Biscuit major Britannia announced that it is looking to invest close to Rs. 450 crore to set up three more Greenfield plants in India over the next three years.

North East, preferably, Guwahati; Andhra Pradesh and Mudhra in Gujarat are said to be the three probable places for the units. Each unit will entail an investment of approximately Rs. 150 crore.

A fourth unit, in Bengal, with a similar investment is also being mulled, according to a media report Varun Berry, Managing Director, Britannia, has said.

Britannia currently has 37 manufacturing units of which 14 are company owned. Six of these units are located in the East that include three in Kolkata, two each in Odisha and Bihar and one in Assam.

The company’s production capacity across these 37 unit stand at one million tonnes.
