Core industries on downhill again; March growth 2.5%

New Delhi, Apr 30 (KNN)  After revival in February, the core eight infrastructure industries including coal, steel and natural gas showed a modest annual growth of 2.5 per cent in March.  These industries had grown by an impressive seven per cent in March 2013.
 
For the financial year 2013-14, as a whole these industries logged in a growth of a meagre 2.6 per cent.
 
In February 2014, the core sector industries had grown by 4.5 per cent reviving hopes of a recovery.  However, the March performance again was subdued.
 
These eight industries have a weight of 37.9 per cent in the overall index of industrial production.
 
While coal production increased by 0.7 per cent in March, 2014 over March, 2013, its cumulative index during April to March, 2013-14 increased by 0.8 per cent over corresponding period of previous year.
 
Crude Oil production declined by 1.6 per cent in March, 2014 over March, 2013. The cumulative index of Crude Oil during April to March, 2013-14 declined by 0.2 per cent over the corresponding period of previous year.
 
Natural Gas production declined by 9.3 per cent in March, 2014 over March, 2013. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2013-14 declined by 13.0 per cent over the corresponding period of previous year.
 
Petroleum refinery production registered a growth of 2.8 per cent in March, 2014 over March, 2013 and its cumulative index during April to March, 2013-14 increased by 1.7 per cent over the corresponding period of previous year.
 
Fertilizer production declined by 6.1 per cent in March, 2014 over March, 2013. However, it registered a cumulative growth of 1.5 per cent during April to March, 2013-14 over the corresponding period of previous year.
 
Steel production recorded a growth of 5.4 per cent in March, 2014 over March, 2013. The cumulative growth during April to March, 2013-14 was 4.3 per cent over the corresponding period of previous year.
 
Cement production remains same in March, 2014 as of March, 2013 while its cumulative growth during April to March, 2013-14 was 3.0 per cent over the corresponding period of previous year.
 
Electricity generation increased by 5.4 per cent in March, 2014 over the period of March, 2013 and it registered a cumulative growth of 5.6 per cent during April to March, 2013-14 over the corresponding period of previous year.  (KNN/ES)
