Council to examine possibility of merging 18% and 12% tax slab: Sushil Modi

New Delhi, Dec 9 (KNN) With the Goods and Services Tax (GST) entering its sixth month since implementation, Sushil Kumar Modi, a member of the GST council and also the head of Group of Ministers (GoM) that is to look into the glitches of the mechanism hinted that the council is exploring the possibility of merging the tax slabs.

Sushil Modi informed that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council would examine the possibility of merging the 12 and 18 per cent tax rates to a new slab.

This new slab can be between the two tax slabs, he added.

He further informed that he has proposed that price tags displayed on items be inclusive of all taxes to the GST council and the proposal is under consideration.

With regard to the highest tax rate of 28 per cent, after the previous meeting of the GST council, majority of the items were pushed to a lower slab, leaving 50 odd items in the high tax rate.

Sushil Modi hinted that the GST council might further strike the list of items that fall under the 28 per cent category.

The Minister however maintained that the new decisions on the One Nation One Tax regime of the government are to come once the revenue structure is stabilized and depending on tax buoyancy, it can be rolled out.
