Government group discusses FDI in multi brand retail

New Delhi, Feb 12 (KNN) Meeting of the high level group on internal trade was held today in the backdrop of political differences in different states over the FDI in multi brand retail.

The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Minister of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution to examine issues linked to internal trade was here today. 

The High level Group was constituted in December, 2013 following decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail. The group is supposed to review the existing laws that govern internal trade and the modalities for elimination of internal trade barriers.

 It has also been asked to determine the safeguards to protect the interest of small traders when compared to organized retail and the need for a regulatory body for the organized retail trade. The Group will make its recommendations within six months from the date of its constitution. 

There is no unanimity of view between the Central and the State Governments on the issue of FDI in multi brand retail.

After change of governments in Delhi and Rajasthan, both the state governments reversed the decision to allow FDI in multi brand retail.

The first meeting of the group was chaired by K V Thomas and it was attended by the representatives of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Finance, Planning Commission, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion and FICCI. (KNN/SD)
