Hardly any growth in industrial output for Jan; retail inflation tad lower in Feb

New Delhi, March 12 (KNN) India’s industrial production just about reversed the trend in January,2014  turning from a negative trend in December,2013 but a mere growth of 0.1 per cent is no consolation as half of the industry segments continued to contract.
 
For the April-January period, there was no growth in the Index of Industrial Production, though some glimmer of hope was visible in the form of slight fall in the retail inflation. The inflation based on consumer price index for February was a tad lower at 8.10 per cent from 8.79 per cent in January, 2014.
 
 “The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of January 2014 stand at 136.5, 192.3 and 171.1 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of  0.7 per cent, (-) 0.7 per cent and 6.5 per cent as compared to January 2013 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-January 2013-14 over the corresponding period of 2012-13 has been (-) 1.5 per cent, (-) 0.4 per cent and 5.7 per cent respectively,” according to an official data.
 
In terms of industries, eleven (11) out of the twenty two (22) industry groups in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during the month of January 2014 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.
 
The industry group ‘Medical, precision & optical instruments, watches and clocks’ has shown the highest positive growth of 17.6 per cent, followed by 15.2 per cent in ‘Electrical machinery and apparatus and 14.4 per cent in ‘Wearing apparel; dressing and dyeing of fur’.
 
On the other hand, some of the other important items showing high negative growth are Telephone Instruments (incl. Mobile Phones & Accessories)’ (-) 30.7 per cent; ‘PVC Pipes and Tubes’ (-) 25.7 per cent, Aluminium wires and extrusions (-) 21.5 per cent.
 
Meanwhile, provisional annual inflation rate based on all India general CPI (Combined) for February 2014 on point to point basis (February 2014 over February 2013) is 8.10 per cent as compared to 8.79 per cent (final) for the previous month of January 2014. The corresponding provisional inflation rates for rural and urban areas for February 2014 are 8.51 per cent and 7.55 per cent respectively.
 
Inflation rates (final) for rural and urban areas for January 2014 are 9.35 per cent and 8.09 per cent respectively, according to an official release. (KNN Bureau)
