Headline inflation at 3-month high at 5.7%; items of mass consumption expensive

New Delhi, Apr 15 (KNN) India’s headline inflation for the month of March rose by 0.5 per cent to 5.70 per cent mainly due to the increase in the rate of mass consumption items such as primary food articles, fuel, power, and manufactured products.

During the corresponding month of the previous year, it was at 5.65 per cent.

“The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 5.70 per cent (provisional) for the month of March, 2014 (over March,2013) as compared to 4.68 per cent (provisional) for the previous month and 5.65 per cent during the corresponding month of the previous year,” said an official statement.

The index for the manufactured products rose by 0.5 per cent to 153.5 from 152.7 for the previous month. Some of the manufactured items for which the rate of inflation increased are – textiles, beverages, tobacco and tobacco products, food products, wood and wood products, paper and paper products, leather and leather products, rubber and plastic products, chemicals and chemical products, machinery and machine tools.

The food inflation climbed to 9.9 per cent in March, compared to 8.12 per cent in the previous month.

The reading for January WPI inflation was revised to 5.17 per cent from 5.05 per cent earlier. (KNN/SD)
