India’s USD 2 Tn Export Target By 2032-33 Hinges On Quality Standards: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi, Feb 23 (KNN) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said quality must define India’s manufacturing and export ecosystem, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s ‘zero defect, zero effect’ vision for Amrit Kaal and Viksit Bharat 2047.

Speaking virtually at the first National Quality Conclave organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Quality Council of India (QCI), Goyal said India’s USD 30–35 trillion economy ambition and USD 2 trillion export target — USD 1 trillion each in goods and services within 6-7 years — depend on uncompromising quality standards.

He noted that 9 free trade agreements signed in the past three to three-and-a-half years with 38 developed nations now cover nearly two-thirds of global GDP, opening opportunities in textiles, leather, footwear and pharmaceuticals, provided Indian products meet global benchmarks.

Five-Point Action Plan

Goyal outlined a five-pillar agenda: strict standard operating processes; workforce skilling and re-skilling; global benchmarking and gap analysis; streamlined testing and certification; and modern shared testing infrastructure across clusters.

He said funding would not be a constraint and urged industry to leverage the Export Promotion Mission (EPM) for meeting global compliance norms.

Shift from ‘Dual Quality’ System

Goyal said India must move away from a past ‘dual-quality’ culture — where export-grade goods differed from domestic offerings — and adopt uniform standards across markets. He urged stakeholders to replace a complacent mindset with a culture of excellence at every level of the production chain.

Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada highlighted the importance of quality-led manufacturing in enhancing India’s credibility as a global export destination.

DPIIT Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia called for coordinated engagement between government and industry, while QCI Chairperson Jaxay Shah said quality must become a daily discipline beyond audits and certifications.

Sector-Focused Consultations

The Conclave marked a first-of-its-kind national initiative built on extensive consultations across more than 20 cities and 14 manufacturing clusters. It covered priority sectors including textiles, leather, footwear and pharmaceuticals, engaging over 50 government and regulatory bodies alongside MSMEs and industry stakeholders.
