New Delhi, May 27, (KNN) The income tax department has sent letters to 35,000 alleged tax defaulters as part of its attempt to make collection system more accountable.

These persons were part of around 12 lakh non-filers identified as a result of data matching exercise.

“The tax department has already sent letter to 1,45,000 defaulters,” according to an official statement  issued today

“Government has also set up a compliance management cell to monitor return filing and tax payment of the target segment,” it said.

The recent measures have been taken after warning from Finance Minister P Chidambaram to tax defaulters.

The Income Tax Department has also initiated a Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence (DW & BI) Project to develop an integrated platform for effective utilisation of information to promote voluntary compliance and deter non-compliance.(KNN)
