June 1: GST registration portal to re-open for 15 days

New Delhi, May 12 (KNN) The GST registration portal GSTN will be opened from June 1 for fifteen days enabling the assesses who haven’t enrolled earlier to enrol for the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The GST that is expected to roll out from July 1 needs the taxpayers to enrol with the online portal. As of now, 61 lakh taxpayers out of 84 lakh assesses have already registered themselves in the first leg of registrations with the GSTN that closed on April 30.

This decision to reopen the enrolment window was announced after Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia had a meeting with the GSTN and CBEC and Infosys. The Revenue Secretary took stock of the preparedness of the I.T sector  to take care of the I.T needs once the GST regime is implemented.

The process of registration started November last year with an aim to enrol 84 lakh VAT, Service Tax assesses to the GSTN to enable migration. The deadline then was March 31st which was further extended to April 30th.

The GSTN is also looking forward to carry out a Pilot on the GST system software from May 2 till May 16th.

Under the pilot, 3,200 taxpayers from all the states and U.T will be picked to test the three modules of GSTN; this includes Registration, Returns and Payments. This will help the portal to identify the shortcomings and work towards a better robust mechanism.

Key officials present in the meeting were CBEC Chairman Vanaja N Sarna, GSTN Chairman Navin Kumar, Infosys Executive Vice President Binod H R., Infosys India Business Unit Head C N Raghupathi and other officials of CBEC and Revenue Department. (KNN/ DA)
