Considering the large segment of unorganised workers in the textile sector, the Minister admitted that Indian labour laws needed amendment, after inaugurating the 59th National Garment Fair in Mumbai yesterday.
“We are aware of the need to take care of 80 per cent unorganised labour working in textiles and clothing sector,” Gangwar said.
According to official data, India is the second largest manufacturer and exporter of textiles and clothing after China.
As far as textile exports are concerned, in the current financial year, they are expected to grow 25 per cent to USD 50 billion. Although growth was relatively sluggish last year, with exports registering USD 40 billion against a target of USD 43 billion, the Minister assured that the industry can expect a healthy growth this year.
The National Garment Fair was organised by the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), a representative Association of the Indian apparel industry for over four decades. It has a membership base of over 20,000 companies, including Readymade Garment Manufacturers, Exporters, Retailers and Ancillary Industry. With its headquarters in Mumbai, CMAI also has branches in New Delhi, Bangalore and Pune. (KNN/ES)
