Last date for filing returns August-5, field offices open Saturday & Sunday
Updated: Aug 01, 2013 06:42:45pm
“The field offices have been asked to make special arrangements for accepting the returns of income from 01.08.2013 to 05.08.2013, including on 3rd August 2013 (Saturday) and 4th August 2013 (Sunday) to facilitate the taxpayers to file their returns,” said an official notification.
Taxpayers are requested to avail the facility of these special arrangements and file their returns during this extended period after paying due taxes.
More than 82 lakh income tax returns have been e-filed till July 29, which is 40 per cent higher than the same period last year, according to the finance ministry.
"On July 30, 2013, 6.23 lakh returns were e-filed till 6 pm. Record peak of more than 85,000 returns per hour has been achieved," said an official release.
However, despite an overwhelming response, some taxpayers have reported problems in accessing the e-filing portal which is primarily due to network constraints of the local internet service providers, the Ministry said.
The e-filing portal has been running without any interruptions and is being continuously monitored by a dedicated team of income tax officials in Bangalore.
The situation will again be reviewed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) today, the release said.
CBDT had made it mandatory for salaried individuals earning up to Rs 5 lakh annually to file income tax returns.
In the last two assessment years (2011-12 and 2012-13), CBDT had exempted salaried employees earning a salary of up to Rs 5 lakh annually and interest income on savings account of up to Rs 10,000 from filing tax returns.
"As returns of income above Rs 5 lakh have to be e-filed online mandatorily, the same will not be received at any of these special counters. Only paper return of income up to Rs 5 lakhs can be filed at these counters," the Finance Ministry statement had earlier said in a release. (KNN/ES)
