Low compliance rates, 50 per cent of the taxpayer still to file return for September

New Delhi, Oct 23 (KNN) Over 3.94 million assesses have paid the goods and services tax (GST) and filed returns for the month of September, slightly more than the 3.76 million returns received for the previous month, a release from Goods and Services tax network informed.

Citing figures, reports have surfaced on the previous Friday mentioning that on the last date for filing summary tax returns for the month of September, a little less than a million tax payers filed their returns.

Also the number of assesses who have filed returns is quite low than the level of compliance that was expected by the authorities.

Earlier the finance ministry notified last month that over 6.8 million assesses were required to file returns for August.  Likewise similar number of assesses were expected to file returns for the month of September as well.

The compliance rate is expected to dip further for the month of October as GST Council, announced provision for more businesses to file returns on a quarterly basis. At the council’s last meeting, the council announced raising the threshold for filing on a quarterly basis to Rs1 crore from Rs75 lakh earlier. (KNN/DA)
