New Delhi, Apr 8 (KNN) India today raised concerns over bio piracy through patents being awarded for traditional knowledge and products like neem and turmeric.

Addressing a meeting of the World Intellectual Property Rights Organisation at Geneva, Commerce and Industries Minister Anand Sharma said that India has been trying to build a consensus among different nations for a binding treaty on traditional knowledge.

He said to protect its traditional knowledge and its products; India is a working on an ambitious initiative of creating a digital library of such products with 2.5 lakh entries.
India expressed “concerns about the fact that at times there is extensive piracy through patents being awarded for traditional knowledge,’’ a Commerce Ministry statement quoting the Minister said.

Sharma also handed over the instrument of Accession to the Madrid protocol.

“This instrumentality will provide an opportunity for Indian companies, which are increasing their global footprint, to register trademarks in member countries of the Protocol through a single application, while also allowing foreign companies a similar dispensation,” it said.  (KNN)
