Onion prices jumps to Rs 80 per kg in Delhi

Mumbai, Nov 6 (KNN) The retail price of onion has touched Rs 80/kg in the national capital despite the central government's measures to boost supply and contain price rise.

Onion prices are ruling high for more than a month in Delhi-NCR due to supply disruption following heavy rains in growing states like Maharashtra.

As per the official data, rates stood at Rs 55/kg on October 1. Onions were once sold at Rs 30-35/kg in retail markets in November 2018

''Again it's the same scenario for us like it was few months before. The prices have gone to 1oo/kg, now you imagine, how vegetables are going to be without onion?,'' Devesh Rai, an office goer told KNN India.

However, the government has decided to facilitate private imports from Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey and Iran and even liberalise phytosanitary and fumigation norms

NAFED was directed to supply the maximum possible quantities to Delhi Government and Mother Dairy/Safal for retailing. Team led by Additional MD, NAFED to go to Nashik and take stock of the situation there and facilitate movement of supplies from Maharashtra to consuming regions including Delhi and adjoining regions.

As per the government release, private traders have informed the government that 80 containers of imported onions have reached Indian ports and 100 containers are in high seas and can be diverted to India.

Delhi government was advised to accompany the Inter Ministerial team of officials going to Karnataka and Rajasthan. They were also advised to hold meeting with traders and encourage them to pick up available supplies in the region. They may also discourage traders from profiteering and speculative pricing.
