New Delhi, May 29 (KNN) A high level panel headed by Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia yesterday discussed transmission issues impacting the power sector.

The group will hold the next meeting on June 26.

The discussion mainly focused on the recommendations of the sub group on 'inadequacies of transmission line: way forward'.

Inadequate transmission lines with respect to rising electricity demand are a main problem facing the sector.

The group also discussed various issues related to coal, hydro and gas. The other members of the group included representatives from power producers and public sector lenders.

ICICI Bank Managing Director Chanda Kochhar, BHEL Chairman and Managing Director B P Rao and Jaypee Group Chairman and CEO Manoj Gaur, among others attended the meeting.

Scindia said the advisory panel, during its next meeting would discuss issues related to amendments to the Electricity Act.

According to the Minister, the sub groups of the panel are working on the issues with regard to gas, hydro and coal segments.

The advisory panel has been set up to resolve multiple problems, including acute fuel shortages, hurting power generation in the country.

Meanwhile, Coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal, Jyotiraditya Scindia  and finance minister P Chidambaram will meet today to finalise the price-pooling model so that the problem of coal linkages for the power plants can be resolved.

Price pooling is being considered for units that have been put up after April 2009. The model that was being considered included blending prices of imported coal and domestic coal to arrive at a higher uniform price that will be paid by all power producers. The model being mooted earlier required power generators to pay a single price that would have the cost of imported coal factored in.

Distribution companies of some states, including West Bengal, are not in favour of price pooling as they believe it will raise the cost of power for consumers. (KNN)
