New Delhi, Feb 19 (KNN) Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce has come down heavy on the India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) stating that high rentals for its Pragati Maidan Exhibition Centre act as a disincentive to the MSME sector to showcase its products at major expos.

“The space rental charges for Pragati Maidan are among the highest in the world rendering it more expensive than the world class venues of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, UAE etc. This high rental impinges upon the investment by organisers by visitor promotion and on other integral aspects that go into the conduct of business friendly exhibitions/fairs,” the Committee headed by Senior BJP Leader and Rajya Sabha MP Shanta Kumar said in its report presented to Parliament.

It called upon the department of Commerce to redefine the trade promotion mandate of ITPO in as much as dedicating its services exclusively for trade promotion of the MSME sector, domestically as well as globally.

“ITPO must work towards finding new products and new markets for Indian exports.”

The Standing Committee of Parliament attached to the Commerce Department said that, “ITPO was found lacking in efforts to realize the full potential of trade opportunities for the Indian MSME sector.

“The Committee recommends ITPO to revisit its plans and schemes…engage itself actively with MSME trade associations and include their representatives on its board to enable proper coordination and feedback.” (KNN/PC)
