RBI cautions public against phishing fraud, fake emails

Mumbai, Nov 11 (KNN) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cautioned people against fraud emails, sent in its name to hack personal banking details of customers.

“It has come to the notice of the Reserve Bank of India that an email has been sent in its name from mail id: Reserve Bank Of India <no-reply@rbi.com> and signed by RBI, Security Team offering a 'new online security protection' called "Netsecured” to “reduce fraud and theft in various banking system…(and)… to enable all customer's online banking in all Indian Banks to get protected and Secured,” RBI said in a notification.

The bank has been running awareness campaigns about such fake emails on a regular basis to alert the public.

“The Reserve Bank cautions members of public that it has not developed any such software; nor has it sent any such mail asking online banking customers to update their account details to secure their online accounts. In fact, the Reserve Bank does not have any mail id with extension @rbi.com,” the notification added.

The central bank said such mails should not be opened and neither should attachments be downloaded as it could result in identity theft.
 
Recently, there had been several scams related to fake emails promising jackpot, millions of dollars or personal banking details sent in the names of the RBI governor with his signature and photograph. There have been several victims of the fraud in the past. Fake links to Indian and foreign banks are provided and users are told to provide account numbers and passwords.  (KNN/SD)
