SC dismisses plea to postpone Budget date; says it won’t influence state polls

New Delhi, Jan 23 (KNN) The Supreme Court today dismissed petition to postpone the Union Budget date due to upcoming Assembly elections in five states.

The apex court said the Budget won't influence state polls.

Refusing to intervene on the matter, SC said: "There is no illustration to support that presentation of Union Budget would influence voters' mind in state elections."

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the Union Budget on February 1 as the government wants to initiate budgetary spending right from the start of financial year in April.

But the budget date is falling just days before the start of Assembly polls in five states, which are scheduled to start from February 4.

The opposition had alleged that the government might influence the voters by announcing special schemes in the budget.
