Southern states top in ASSOCHAM study of Best Performing States

New Delhi, Mar 16 (KNN) A comparative study on states released by ASSOCHAM placed two southern states on top with Tamil Nadu securing the first place and Kerala locking the second.

The study titled best performing states (BPS) judged all the states on 9 parameters and the data used in the study were for 2009-2011 and 2012-14.

Tamilnadu ranked among the best performing states (BPS) in terms of eight out of the nine development parameters including economy, power, roads and health, lagging behind only in education.

Neighboring state Kerala which stood second was the best state in overall development, income and removing inequality, health, roads, the study said.

Other state which gathered the attention were Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal which were the best performing states in four each of the nine parameters while Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Haryana, Maharashtra and Odisha were best in three of the criteria.

“Both these states now need to put in place a favourable investment climate through policy interventions on land acquisition and other clearances and they could do much better,” ASSOCHAM President Rana Kapoor said.

In terms of income and equality, states including Kerala, Telangana, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh Punjab performed well whereas the worst performing states were Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jammu and Kashmir and Chhattisgarh.

For industrial development, the industry body considered number of industrial entrepreneurs memorandum and MSME entrepreneur memorandum and judged Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh as the top states in industrial development. (KNN/VV)
