Swaraj to Pakistan: Let's do business

New Delhi, Dec 9 (KNN) External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today said that it is time for India and Pakistan to "display maturity" and do business with each other.

Swaraj is on three day visit to Pakistan to attend the Heart of Asia conference, an annual event aimed at promoting stability and development in Afghanistan.
 
Addressing the conference there in Islamabad, she said, “It is time that we displayed the maturity and self-confidence to do business with each other and strengthen regional trade and cooperation.”

She further added, “The entire world is waiting and rooting for a change. Let us not disappoint them. Let me take this opportunity to extend our hand to Pakistan as well.”

Swaraj is the most senior official to visit Pakistan after the Modi Government took charge in 2014.

The bilateral trade between India and Pakistan was USD 2.35 billion till the last financial year, according to the Indian High commission in Pakistan. India gave most favoured nation (MFN) status to Pakistan in the year 1996.

A ceasefire agreement was signed between India and Pakistan in the year 2003, an initiative taken by the then Indian Prime minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee.

Meanwhile, Commerce & Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today told Prliament that Pakistan has yet not granted the MFN status to India and has also not been able to honour its commitments of removing trade restrictions on the land route. (KNN Bureau)
