WPI inflation positive at 0.34% after 17 months

New Delhi, May 16 (KNN) Wholesale prices rose by 0.34% in April after 17 straight months of fall, against -0.85% in March. In April last year, it was minus 2.43 percent.

Prices of manufactured goods increased 0.71 percent year on year in April. Fuel prices dropped 4.83 percent from a year earlier in April, slower than a provisional 8.30 percent fall a month ago.

Wholesale food prices for April rose 4.23 percent year-on-year, compared with a provisional 3.73 percent gain in March.

Inflation in vegetables came in at 2.21 percent compared with (-)2.26 percent in April while the same in pulses was high at 36.36 percent as against 34.45 percent.

Reacting to this, VK Suri, Banking and Financial Expert told KNN, “It has come in positive after the one and half year.  It is more for the food component which can affect the economy much. CPI data should not go above five per cent; I feel it is steel which is in a comfortable zone.”

“It won’t have any bad impact on industry. Negative inflation is not good indication. People are interpreting it on a different way. Major part is food and it can’t impact on monetary policy of RBI. Monetary policy does not control the food. It won’t create any problem which would impact the Economy,” he added. (KNN Bureau)
