New Delhi (KNN) Internet has surely become an indispensable part of our lives. Thanks to the rapid changing ways we are using internet in our day to day lives through the various devices easily available in our homes, businesses and cities.

Needless to say, there has been a massive transition in the last decade – from desktops to laptops to mobile devices.

Making further use of technology, Internet of Everything (IoE) market will soon expand the boundaries of the systems and the network, making a huge impact on our lives giving every bit of information needed by us at our fingertips.

There are several applications of Internet of Everything which can add connectivity and intelligence to every device around us in order to give them special functions.  When a smart city is equipped with IoE sensor networks, people living there can make smart use of their resources by using them only when needed.  CISCO has developed systems which save considerable time, money as well as energy through IoE and also enhance quality of life in general.

Let’s have a look at some interesting applications of Internet of Everything which can make our lives more convenient:

Information about parking spaces, traffic jams, bus routes and timings:

Getting an alert about open spaces in parking lots can not only save time and energy on office days and on weekends but will also remarkably de-congest the traffic and reduce CO2 emission. Smart parking in Nice, France is a perfect example of successful implementation of this application which has reduced traffic congestion by almost 30 per cent. Further, through mobile interfaces, bus riders will know in advance about routes, where a bus is at a particular time, helping them to plan their travel.

Streets with smart lighting:

Smart lighting can help save energy enormously with the use of intelligent lighting systems that can adapt to weather changes.  The city of Nijmegen in Netherlands constructed a new city ring road in 2013 with intelligent lighting solution which enabled the street lights to adjust their brightness according to the usage and weather. For example, during late night hours, when the road usage is limited, the streetlights are at their brightest, wasting a lot of energy. Even turning-off these lights makes the roads unsafe. To address this, the city founded a solution to the problem by adoption smart lightings which intelligently adapt the lighting levels based on the weather conditions and traffic density.

Warnings about accidents, traffic jams and bad weather:

Traffic can be drastically reduced with systems that can intimate about the real time traffic information on the roads so as to take corrective actions when necessary.  Users will be able to know in advance about traffic patterns and this can improve traffic flow. Cisco Intelligent Roadways not only envisage increase in operational efficiency and improve traffic flow but also provide better security.

Keeping watch over supply chain procedures in the retail industry:

According to a research done by IT giant CISCO, retailers will use the IoE technologies to generate USD 1.6 trillion via unused income and savings over the next 10 years.  Deeper intelligence into the supply chain will benefit not only the manufacturers, distributors, and retailers, but also the consumers, as their demands can be better met with this. Some of the ways in which IoE can help supply chain professionals are - reduce their asset costs by knowing about product issues on time to find a solution; manage warehouse stock; and help plan in a better way.

Keeping a tab on water levels in reservoirs and rivers:

Use of IoE technology on waterways can alert about the real time flooding conditions which can give alarm as soon as the waterway is on the verge of flooding. IoE can also help keep sewage out of water bodies by giving feedback to the concerned departments in the control process.

Tracking inventory in a manufacturing plant:

Plant managers with the use of CISCO’s technology can know at any given time the status of their production inventory in a manufacturing plant, as wireless sensors are affixed on their assets.

Information kiosks which are both interactive and updated constantly:

Interactive Experience Platform can allow users to access information with real time updates on a one to one basis. This would also improve use of targeted advertising.

Smart garbage bins:

Sensors in garbage bins sends signal to the concerned departments when the pick-up is required. Through the garbage sensors, Finland has been able to do 40 per cent savings in waste collection. The process will keep the city clean and help in proper waste management.

Monitoring condition of patients in hospitals:

Doctors will be able to access information about any patient on their smart phones through a sensor attached to the medical devices.  The sensor will send all information to a database which the doctor can access on his/her smartphone.  This way, the doctor can monitor the patients’ progress.

Burglar alerts in homes and offices:

IoE can alarm about any intrusions into the houses and offices by sending an alert on the phones. In addition, an alarm will go off and give a live feed of the break-in on the smartphone. (KNN Bureau)
