Science Utsav strives to revolutionize education

New Delhi, Oct 14 (KNN) That education plays a fundamental role in our lives is common knowledge. However numerous surveys on education have revealed flaws in the education system and worsening quality of education over the years. Moreover, rote learning techniques have lowered the interest of children in studies. In this scenario, Science Utsav has taken the initiative to ensure that learning experiences are both effective and satisfying.
Co-founder of Science Utsav, Harsh Atri tells KNN about his start-up and the objectives of Science Utsav which is a parallel educational program for children in the age group of 5 to 14 years.
“We have created an interactive learning platform for the participants through hands-on activities, science experiments, fun projects, science games, puzzles, science expeditions, role plays and other innovative pedagogy techniques. We believe that practicality is everything,” said Atri.
A mechanical engineer by profession, Arti who passed out with distinction, said that he realized he knew very little about the application of what he had learnt at school, college or engineering.
“It was very difficult for me to come to terms with the fact that most of the engineers in our country had theoretical or book knowledge but very little knowledge about application,” he said.
That’s when Arti along with a partner started working with kids aged 5-14 to make their foundation strong; helping them realise that science is interesting and not just a subject that allows them to score marks.
“We have been working with a lot of organizations to make science a fun subject so that what we missed out on is not missed out by today’s kids,” he added.
Science Utsav is primarily known for its innovation in teaching and learning techniques. The use of in-house toys and working models are designed keeping in mind the child’s area of interest and psychology.
“Kinesthetic learning and supporting experiments are the USP of our start-up,” Arti explained.
Thus far, the firm seems to have impacted 120 schools. Annually they organize 250 events, having reached 60000 participants, with a unique customer base. Today, Science Utsav has 13 employees and employs 75 freelancers.
Their sources of funding are summer camps, corporate events, yearlong programs at schools/institutes as well as Science birthday parties.
The entrepreneur also talked about the initial challenges they faced while organising Science Utsav. It was a hard for the start-up to reach out to schools. Besides, school managements took very long to respond to proposals. Consequently, they have had to keep their team small and considering that their business is research and operations intensive, they do certainly depend on their resources. Arti also pointed out that teacher quality affects the effectiveness of the workshops.
Science Utsav is currently having an annual turnover of over 60 lakhs. Aided with supporting experiments and role plays, it now has a presence in 5 cities.
The co-founder also talks about social and economic benefit they are anticipating via Science Utsav. “India is a hub for information technology already. With students moving towards technical education in India while the world over they are moving away from it, there is great potential for India to become a hub for all technology services,” he said.
“My efforts are focused towards empowering the participants in making the choice of Science easy as they find the subject interesting and easy to learn and understand,” Atri said.
The start-up plans to reach 10,000 children by the end of 2015 and plans on collaborating with more schools using various offline and online methods.
“We plan to provide a scalable model in science education that is affordable to all in the next five years,” Atri concluded. (KNN Bureau)
