New Delhi, Oct 5 (KNN) The advent in technology, taking a leap ahead, has moulded the future car technology. ZENE has taken the initiative to bring about this change, aiming to revolutionise the way we interact with our cars.

ZENE is a plug-and-play device that plugs in your car’s OBD port, fetches information from your car’s computers, does data crunching and provides you insights into your car performance, your driving behaviour and a lot more.

ZENE keeps track of the car's performance and any impending issues. It is not only a guide on improving car's efficiency and fuel economy, but also claims to inform about a person’s driving behaviour and way to make it better.

In our interview with the founder, Dheeraj Batra, we discover the trail of their journey to create ZENE.

Giving a brief description about the start-up, Batra said, “You can save a significant amount on your car's servicing and fuel usage by using ZENE.”

“ZENE will not only give you a safer and efficient car, but also alert you if something is going to fail in your car. How about increasing fuel economy by 12-15 per cent or reducing emission by 20 per cent,” he asked.

The founders initially wanted to setup brick-and-mortar service stations for cars and did some long winding research and put efforts to make that happen.

“However, service centres in the automotive sector is not easy to do as it may sound. So we set out to handle that challenge with technology,” Batra said. Having a background in automotive electronics and car servicing helped the founders to connect the dots and build the right solution.

ZENE is a smart car solution having its feet firmly fixed around easing servicing of vehicles and providing right and timely information to the customers.

While ZENE has a technology intensive solution, lot of work happens at the back-end, behind the scenes and customers only receive a guidance or decision. ZENE is a plug and play solution that connects end-to-end value chain of car usage i.e. from telling customers about problems with their cars, guiding them on their driving behaviour, helping them on increasing fuel economy and better driving, it also connect them with partner service stations to get service issues addressed.

“Attracting right talent stays a challenge, and will remain a challenge for start-ups. And we are no different.” The founder discloses the complications they had to face.

“Moreover, as we are focused on a nascent market, funding opportunities are limited. Even the banks wouldn't fund without a huge collateral backing. We may talk about supporting manufacturing in India (may work well for established companies), but the truth is that for a start-up to establish something in a manufacturing, electronics or research field, the battle is tougher than it looks from outside,” he continues.

“We are an automotive company that has a strong technology platform,” claims Batra.

The notion of digitalising the market has triggered the debate for a long time.

The entrepreneur does agree to the fact of E-commerce stepping onto the traditional market to some extent adding his own notion in the regard, “some are fad, other will become fable! E-commerce will stay big for commodities, but will fizzle out for which customers love to experience such as restaurants, holiday shopping etc.”

Batra also talked about the plans for their enterprise in the coming years. He disclosed that they are very focused on strengthening ZENE's current offerings, which are: ZENE Smart (plug and play device) and ZENE Fit (service centers network).

“We have a solid product and we would like to strengthen it before thinking of anything else. That said, opportunity in the automotive sector is significant and world is the playground,” he uttered.

The founder thinks strongly of the emerging enterprises in the country. He said “We, as a start-up, strongly believe that SMEs are strength to any country's economy. You may have big businesses setting shops in India, but what will define and make India better (or any country for that matter) is how strong or supportive the SME sector is. They are the core to any country's economy.”

With ease of access and international reach, SMEs in India has now wider and deeper reach throughout the world. “With available local talent, we are at the right juncture to make a bigger impact,” exerted the founder.

The founder is of the view that the current government being pro industry and businesses has set the right tone for investment and business ecosystem. But he also believes that there needs to be targeted push for nurturing research focused start-up and small manufacturing establishments.

“May be giving incentives to established companies to help start-ups and SMEs grow - the way it used to happen pre-open-economic era,” he concluded. (KNN/ J)
