Delhi Electrical Traders say demand of Chinese goods gone down by 50%; Chinese media says boycott not successful

New Delhi, Oct 14 (KNN) Sale of Chinese electrical products before Diwali has drastically fallen, Delhi Electricals Traders Association told KNN adding that this year the boycott would impact the Indian traders only as they have already imported all the goods from China.

In the past one month, people from different parts of the country have started boycotting Chinese goods. Ahead of Diwali, this is the peak season of doing business for them especially of products such as lights, gifts, statues, decoratives etc, people are taking pledge not to buy Made in China products.

This year, the electrical traders in Delhi, whose Diwali sale closes at least a week before the festival, are witnessing negligible footfall.

“The sale of Chinese electrical products have reduced by more than 50 per cent this year,” Bharat Bhushan, President, Delhi Electricals Traders Association told KNN.

He said even if the customers are visiting the shops, they are not asking for Chinese lights.

“This year the repercussions will be borne by the Indian traders only as they have already imported all the products by now,” Bhushan said.

He said Chinese lights capture 95 per cent of the market and Indian lights merely 5 per cent so far.

“The Chinese products are so cheap that it is difficult to replicate it here as of now. Next year the sale of Indian products might increase but this year the shopkeepers and traders are crying of no footfall,” he added.

Similar statements were made by the Sadar Bazar and old Delhi traders.

Most of the traders from the wholesale market hub of the city told KNN that the sale has dropped drastically but this year only the investors would face the loss.

Meanwhile, according to a Chinese media report, “Data from China’s General Administration of Customs showed Thursday that India in September exported goods worth $922 million to China, while importing goods worth $5.4 billion from China.”

It added: “The major imports from China include electronic components, telecom instruments, chemicals and pharmaceutical products, while India’s major exports to China include ore, plastics and cotton.”

According to mid-year statistics from India, bilateral trade was $70.73 billion in 2015-16, down from $72.34 billion in the previous fiscal. (KNN Bureau)
