India, Germany's Hessen Explore Cooperation In AI, Clean Energy, Pharma, Advanced Manufacturing
New Delhi, Aug 19 (KNN) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions with Hessen Minister-President Boris Rhein to explore opportunities for strengthening economic and technological cooperation between India and the German state.
Minister for Federal and European Affairs, International Affairs and Debureaucratisation Manfred Pentz, along with a delegation of German businesses were also present.
The discussions covered emerging and high-growth sectors including artificial intelligence (AI), clean energy, research and development, data centres, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), pharmaceuticals, chemicals, advanced manufacturing, fintech, deep-tech and skilling.
Goyal highlighted the potential for stronger partnerships between Indian and Hessian businesses across trade, investment, technology and innovation, particularly in technology-intensive and knowledge-driven sectors.
Hessen Offers Strong Digital and Technology Ecosystem
Hessen offers a strong ecosystem for such cooperation, with Frankfurt serving as a major European financial and digital hub.
The Rhine-Main region also hosts more than half of Germany's large-scale data centres, while Frankfurt is home to the DE-CIX internet exchange.
The state is also expanding its capabilities in AI, quantum computing and deep-tech. In May 2026, Hessen inaugurated an AI and Quantum Computing Application Centre in Frankfurt to connect companies, research institutions and startups and accelerate the commercialisation of advanced technologies.
Focus on Pharma, Chemicals and Clean Energy
Pharmaceuticals and chemicals were identified as key areas for collaboration, given Hessen's established industrial base, international companies and R&D capabilities.
The discussions also covered clean energy and emerging technologies, including Hessen's initiatives in next-generation energy technologies such as laser-based nuclear fusion research.
Opportunities in GCCs, Fintech and Advanced Manufacturing
Opportunities in GCCs, digital technologies, fintech, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, R&D and talent development were also discussed.
The engagement comes against the backdrop of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to improve market access and create new opportunities for trade and investment between businesses in India and the European Union.
India, Hessen to Deepen Business Partnerships
The agreement could help Indian and Hessian companies deepen partnerships, integrate into global value chains and explore new investments.
Goyal said India aims to work with Hessen’s business community to leverage opportunities from the India-EU FTA and strengthen business ties, technology partnerships, investment and innovation-led growth.
