India, Indonesia Deepen Cooperation In Defence, Trade And Strategic Sectors
New Delhi, Jun 8 (KNN) India and Indonesia on Sunday held wide-ranging discussions to deepen bilateral cooperation across sectors including defence, maritime affairs, trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and food security under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Ministers Review Expanding Bilateral Partnership
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hosted Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono in New Delhi during the eighth India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting, where both sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and explored new avenues for collaboration.
Indonesia is regarded as a key partner in India's Act East Policy, with bilateral trade and investment ties witnessing steady growth in recent years, reported PTI.
Discussions Cover Defence, Trade And Emerging Technologies
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the two ministers discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in political, defence and security matters, maritime affairs, trade and investment, healthcare, digital technologies, energy, connectivity, space, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar said the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has recorded strong progress in recent years.
He noted that discussions covered defence and security cooperation, maritime and shipping links, trade, fintech, health, pharmaceuticals, fertilisers, critical minerals, tourism, education and cultural exchanges.
Focus On Regional And Multilateral Cooperation
The ministers also exchanged views on regional developments, enhancing multilateral coordination and advancing India-ASEAN cooperation.
The two sides are also understood to have discussed the economic implications of the ongoing crisis in West Asia, including its potential impact on global trade and energy markets.
Leaders' Engagement Gives Fresh Momentum To Ties
Jaishankar recalled the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during the latter's visit to India in January 2025, stating that the engagement had imparted fresh momentum to bilateral ties.
Sugiono also highlighted the significance of President Subianto's India visit, saying it helped chart a new course for the partnership between the two countries.
Commitment Reaffirmed Across Established And Emerging Sectors
The MEA said both ministers welcomed the upward trajectory of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation across established and emerging sectors.
India and Indonesia share deep civilisational links and have increasingly expanded engagement in strategic, economic and regional affairs as part of their growing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
