Agartala, Jan 14 (KNN)  The first of its kind Border Haat or market has been set up alongside the Indo-Bangladesh international border at Srinagar, a bordering village in South Tripura to promote trade and livelihood opportunities particularly among MSMEs living on both sides.

Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Sarkar inaugurated the Border Haat in presence of Commerce Minister, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Tofail Ahmed; MP, India, Jitendra Choudhury; MP, Bangladesh, Shirin Akhtar; and High Commissioner of India in Dhaka, Pankaj Shran, an official release said on Tuesday.

Tripura located in an advantageous position in respect of strategic, diplomatic and economic relations with Bangladesh is likely to become the gateway in tandem with implementation of the ‘Act East’ policy adopted by the Government of India.

According to a Times of India report, the market which was set up at a cost of Rs 2.4 crore will provide livelihood opportunities to people living alongside the border and in the process help traders in both countries.  It also said that while people living within a 5 kms radius on either side can trade locally produced goods and crops, no tax will be imposed and currencies of both countries will be accepted.

The report goes on to say that around 16 items have been shortlisted for trade at the haat to include agricultural and horticultural crops, spices, minor forest products (excluding timber), fish and dry fish, dairy and poultry products, cottage industry items, wooden furniture, and handloom and handicraft items.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Border Haat, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman Sitharaman said the Centre intended to move for development of Bangladesh through Tripura, as it is looking forward to the North-East as the threshold to reach the South-East Asian countries.

In addition, she assured to look into the matter to expedite building the bridge over Feni River.

On the other hand, Sarkar appealed to the governments of both countries to provide transit facility using Ashuganj and Chittagong sea ports in Bangladesh. He said if allowing transit facility is not possible, trans-shipment facility could be taken into consideration and that would promote closer relations between two sides.  (KNN/ES)
