During his visit to India on August-26, 2014, British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg launched the UK ‘Dadabhai Naoroji Awards’.
“The Awards, named after the first Indian origin British MP, are to celebrate those who have helped further the UK-India relationship in the fields of commerce, culture, or education,” an official release said.
The 3 new annual awards are a part of expanding the prosperity partnership between UK and India.
Any member of the public can nominate someone who has excelled in 1 of the 3 fields. Only nominees of British or Indian nationality are eligible. The nominations (forms found on https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dadabhai-naoroji-awards-nomination-form) have to be emailed to Naoroji.Awards@fco.gov.uk by midnight on September-30, 2014.
The winners will be invited to receive their award at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s annual Diaspora reception in Durbar Court in London on 17 October 2014.
The new awards are dedicated to Dadabhai Naoroji, the first Asian Member of the UK Parliament and the man who brought the first Indian business to the UK. The fact that the awards are in his name pays tribute to his commitment to the Indian people and his key role in historical events.
According to data from the UK government, its work on prosperity is a cross-cutting effort to help ensure coherent engagement with India on economic and trade policy, research, science and innovation, health, education and skills.
This is delivered through UK’s Science and Innovation Network in India; Research councils UK (RCUK) India; economic and trade policy, UK Intellectual Property Office; Department of International Development (DFID); and British High Commission Programme Funds such as Chevening Scholarships and Prosperity Fund.
