Shipping facility between Kolkata & Myanmar to be launched

Kolkata, Jul 19 (KNN) Shipping facility between Kolkata and Myanmar is being introduced shortly with subsidised freight charges for 6 months, said chief of exporters’ body adding that the exporters should avail the same and look to Myanmar both for trade and investment. 

Exporters should look aggressively towards East and exploit the market opportunity which has come in the wake of signing of ASEAN FTA and CECA/CEPA with Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and Korea, President of Federation of Indian Exporters’ Organization (FIEO), Rafeeque Ahmed has said.

He also pointed out that in the recent Budget, Finance Minister has talked about active involvement of the States in promoting exports and stated that institutional mechanism for regular dialogue with States would be set up to facilitate exports from the States.

As per the Economic Survey, the export from West Bengal stood at USD 10.5 billion, the share of the state in India's exports was 3.4 per cent in 2013-14, said Regional Chairman, FIEO, Eastern Region, Ramesh Kumar Agarwal, while speaking at the FIEO’s Niryat Shree and Niryat Bandhu National awards, “Eastern Region Export Excellence Awards” held earlier this week.

Given its locational advantages, West Bengal and other states in the eastern region hold a promise of new era in commerce and trade which is evident from the pace of activities which have comparatively increased, he said.

West Bengal, also, has the advantage of being the interface and commercial hub for all its neighbouring states and is thus is a gateway to ASEAN, China, Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand with which India is currently negotiating Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements and it is assumed that with a collective GDP of 19 trillion USD in these countries we will be able to reach out to 40 per cent of the world market, Agarwal said.

Minister for Commerce and Industries, Government of West Bengal, Amit Mitra said that the state of West Bengal was contributing USD 10.5 billion of valuable foreign exchange reserves to the nation and stated that the Commerce and Industry department will work closely with FIEO to target export earnings of USD 20 billion.

He stated that the timeframe of achieving the target will be worked out in consultation with FIEO and its members.

Congratulating the 18 export award winners, majority of who were from West Bengal, he stated that collectively the total exports of these award winners were to the tune of Rs 11000 crore. He stated that this will provide encouragement to other entrepreneurs to improve upon this benchmark. (KNN/SD)
