Domestic tourism registers 23.5% increase in monsoon season: Study

According to a study by ASSOCHAM Tourism Council (ATC), there has been a surge in travel by Indians within the country in the last three years during the monsoon season. The demand was driven by the growing middle class and rising incomes and a discount by hotels, airlines and tour operators for the period.
The chamber carried out the survey in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Ahmedabad and interacted with as many as 350 tour operators. The estimates were based on the feedbacks received from various tour operators.
The paper revealed that earlier monsoon used to be a lean period for travelling but that scenario is changing fast. This year, the domestic tourists are coming out in large numbers during the monsoons.
There are many states who all are promoting monsoon tourism in a big way with special deals on offer at hotels and resorts, adds the survey. There are offering discounts of between 25 and 35 per cent on holiday packages during the monsoon season, it said.
As per the study, Goa, Kerala, Ladakh, Jaipur, Agra and Udaipur are among the most popular places for monsoon travel.
It also added that the tourism industry is giving equal importance to domestic tourism because the growth in the domestic leisure sector has been extraordinary over the last couple of years.
Many hoteliers, travel agent have come up with their attractive offers for domestic routes. As per the findings, there is a rising trend seen wherein the Indian travellers are looking for short but multiple holiday experiences in a year, it said.
In Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, Bharatpur bird sanctuary, located close to Delhi-NCR experiences peak tourism traffic during the rainy season as it attracts most of them from their nearby overcrowded cities, according to Delhi tour operators.
For Indian monsoon getaways Goa, Agra, Jaipur, Ooty, Munnar, Kodaikanal, Odisha, Gangtok, Manali, Darjeeling, Himachal and Kerala offer attractive opportunities, it said. (KNN Bureau)
