New Delhi, Apr 11 (KNN)  Adopting clean technology doesn’t have to cost the earth, whether you are a large global enterprise or a local shop, but it could ensure the long-term survival of your business, said a recent BBC News report.

The report refers to a Global Trends 2030 report by the US National Intelligence Council (NIC) that suggests, “As the population continues to grow, the demand for food, water and energy will rise by as much as 50 per cent by 2030.”

It predicts that energy costs alone would grow by 25 per cent over the next 10 years.  However, businesses are not doing enough to prepare for the changing world.

Chief Executive of UK’s Carbon Trust, a not-for-profit organisation that advises businesses on how to reduce their energy usage believes that many businesses could go bust if they do not go green and embrace clean technology.

The BBC report further brings to light green principles following by a certain Houweling's Tomatoes that with the use of photovoltaic solar panels, capturing and reusing rainwater, capturing heat from refrigeration units, drip irrigation and water recycling, has used about 1/6th of the water and 1/10th of the land which is typically needed to produce the same amount of produce using traditional practices.  Further, more than 90 per cent of the company’s waste is recycled.

Clearly, many businesses are dangerously complacent about their approach to sustainability.   They have no set goals for reducing water consumption, waste production or carbon emissions.

The report has attributed this attitude to most units seeing green technology as an obligation and a cost.  But clean tech costs for solar panels and LED lighting among others have reduced dramatically, it said.  (KNN)
