The IIIT Bill 2013 is pending in the Lok Sabha. The Bill seeks to declare four existing IIITs in Gwalior, Allahabad, Jabalpur and Kancheepuram as institutions of national importance. It also seeks to give IIITs administrative autonomy and uniformity.
These four institutes were established by the Central Government under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development wants to expand the institute on public private partnership (PPP) basis to meet the challenges of the Indian information technology industry.
The move might increase the number of seats in such institutes and narrow skill shortages in the Indian IT industry.
The IT sector has increased its contribution to India's gross domestic product (GDP) from 1.2 per cent in 1998 to 7.5 per cent in 2012.
According to the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), the IT sector in India generated revenue of USD 100 billion in 2012, where export and domestic revenue stood at USD 69.1 billion and USD 31.7 billion respectively, growing by over 9 per cent. (KNN/GUNJ)
