New Delhi, Jul 2 (KNN)  In order to compete in a variety of skills ranging from welding to web designing, a 21 member business delegation led by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has left today for the 42nd WorldSkills Competition in Leipzig, Germany.

Also called the Olympics of Skills, the event will be held from July 2-6, 2013.

“India, this year has sent 22 contestants to participate in 20 trades.  The national coordination of contestants is being done by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC),” said CII.

Further, CII has contributed to CNC milling, CNC turning, mechatronics, welding, and electronics trades through six contestants.  These contestants apart from being polished in skill have also gone through coaching and mentoring to prepare them for the competition.

Chairman CII, National Committee on Skill Development, S Mahalingam, said, “We hope that such events will create energy and interest in youth for skills.”

The competition is organized by the Amsterdam-based not-for-profit organization WorldSkills International and is the largest vocational skills competition in the world.

Further, it takes place in different countries every two years and brings together over 1,000 people, up to 22 years of age. It is a place for contestants to benchmark their skill competency.

Co-Chairman, CII National Committee on Skill Development and President Rajeev Dubey, said, “It is important to create a well-balanced eco system for skills development.  It is also vital for industry to have a strongly skilled workforce and this can only happen if each individual workman takes pride in his skill”.

The competitions were conducted to invoke interest in workers about their machines to enable quality production eventually. (GUNJ/KNN)
