New Delhi, Dec 10 (KNN) The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is implementing Steel up scaling project by which secondary steel sector can leverage advanced energy -efficient technologies for energy conservation.

The project is a part of the programme, “Fast tracking energy efficiency in secondary steel sector” in India being implemented with support from Australian Aid and Ministry of Steel.

UNDP is organizing a daylong national meet on “Fast tracking energy efficiency in secondary steel sector on Friday in the national capital to highlight the best practices and experiences in energy efficiency.

“The objective of the meet is to share experiences, felicitate energy efficient units and campaign for fast tracking energy efficiency in units who are yet to adopt energy efficiency measures and to deepen energy efficiency in the units that have adopted first set of interventions,” said the organizers.

Aruna Sunderarajan, Secretary , Ministry of Steel will deliver key note speech at the inaugural session followed by special address by Yuri Afanasiev, UN Resident Coordinator And Resident Representative, UNDP and Ryan Thew, First Secretary-Development, Australian High Commission.

There will be plenary and technical sessions later in the day to discuss and deliberate on the impact of advanced technologies adoption in secondary steel sector.

UNDP has identified five second generation technologies in selected steel re-rolling mills in India for energy conservation and will support their adoption. The five identified technologies are power generation through waste heat recovery from fuel gas, effective furnace atmosphere control through automation, high-performing insulation for re-heating furnaces, coal drying using waste heat available in flue gas and energy efficiency in motion control.

The programme has received tremendous response as more than 385 units have signed up and 282 of them have implemented energy efficiency measures as of now. (KNN Bureau)
