Unemployment rate higher in urban India compared to rural India: Study

New Delhi, Apr 13 (KNN) The unemployment rate in urban India is more than that in the rural India and the current gap between the two rates has widened to 3.05 percentage points, according to a study.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and Centre of Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt Ltd (CMIE) jointly did a study on Unemployment Rate of India.

According to the study, “Unemployment in India is estimated to be 8.37 per cent during the first quarter of 2016. It was the highest at 8.72 per cent in January.”

The rate fell to 7.98 per cent in February, but then rose again to 8.42 per cent in March.

Unemployment rate is systematically higher in urban India compared to rural India.

In January 2016, while unemployment rate in rural India was 8.05 per cent, it was 9.99 per cent in urban India. Although urban unemployment fell marginally in February, the gap between rural and urban unemployment rates widened.

Rural unemployment fell from 8.05 to 7.16 per cent and urban rates fell from 9.99 to 9.62 per cent.

“The gap therefore widened from 1.94 percentage points in January to 2.46 percentage points. In March, unemployment in urban India started rising again and reached 10.48 per cent from 9.62 per cent in February. Unemployment in rural India increased too, from 7.16 per cent to 7.43 per cent. Thus, the gap between the two rates widened to 3.05 percentage points,” highlighted the study.
