Amazon Digitises 12 Million Small Businesses, Creates 1.4 Million Jobs
New Delhi, Dec 10 (KNN) Amazon India announced on Tuesday that it has digitised 12 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, exceeding its target of digitising 10 million MSMEs by 2025, a year ahead of schedule.
The milestone, highlighted during Amazon Smbhav, the company's annual event for small businesses, underscores Amazon’s commitment to supporting India's digital economy.
Samir Kumar, Country Manager at Amazon India, shared, “We have enabled over 12 million small businesses to become part of India’s digital economy. Additionally, we have driven nearly USD 13 billion in e-commerce exports and created close to 1.4 million direct and indirect jobs.”
This achievement aligns with Amazon’s ambitious 2022 pledge to create 2 million jobs, enable USD 20 billion in exports, and digitise 10 million MSMEs by 2025.
Since the launch of its Amazon Global Selling programme in 2015, the company has reported exponential growth in exports, doubling cumulative exports from USD 5 billion in seven years to USD 13 billion in less than two years.
The rapid growth of MSMEs as sellers has been pivotal to Amazon’s success, as well as for competitors like Flipkart and Meesho.
These small businesses are expected to play an even greater role as e-commerce evolves, including the rise of hyperlocal and 10-minute delivery models.
Amit Agarwal, Senior VP, Emerging Markets at Amazon, emphasised the company’s alignment with India’s economic vision: “India is a key market for Amazon. Our focus on digitising small businesses, boosting exports, and creating jobs aligns well with the government’s priorities.”
Amazon India’s financial performance also showed improvement, with Amazon Seller Services reporting a 14 per cent increase in revenues for FY 2023-24.
While expenses rose by 6.5 per cent, net losses reduced significantly, from Rs 4,854 crore in FY23 to Rs 3,469 crore in FY24.
Amazon's latest achievements highlight the vital role of MSMEs in shaping the future of India’s e-commerce landscape and showcase the company’s ongoing commitment to driving economic growth.
