Decarbonisation In 7 Key Clusters Could Save Rs 37 Crore Annually: CSTEP Report

New Delhi, Jul 9 (KNN) A recent study by the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) has unveiled the potential for energy savings and emissions reduction in India's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector.

The research, released on Friday, examined decarbonisation strategies across 66 units in seven key MSME clusters.

The findings suggest that implementing energy-efficient measures, renewable energy solutions, and advanced technologies in these seven clusters could yield annual savings of Rs 37 crore in energy costs while reducing CO2 emissions by 1,36,581 tonnes.

The research spanned units in diverse locations such as Alathur, Asansol-Chirkunda, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Coimbatore, Ludhiana, and Tiruppur.

The study encompassed energy-intensive sectors including pharmaceuticals, refractories, aluminium die-casting, bakeries, and textiles.

While the potential benefits are significant, the report notes that realizing these savings would require an initial investment of Rs 90 crore across the surveyed clusters.

This upfront cost presents a challenge for widespread adoption of decarbonisation measures in the MSME sector.

Decarbonisation, defined as the reduction or elimination of carbon dioxide emissions, is increasingly viewed as a critical strategy for mitigating climate change impacts across various industries.

This study provides valuable insights into the economic and environmental benefits of sustainable practices in the MSME sector, which plays a crucial role in India's industrial landscape.
