New Delhi, Aug 28 (KNN)  In India, the festivals usually as a source of celebration and joy, but street vendors and laborers take festivals as an incentive or an opportunity for making larger money.

With Raksha Bandhan just a day away, colourful and decorated rakhis and other materials are being sold at different areas in Delhi.

As people go on a shopping frenzy ahead of the festivities, small and big vendors get a chance to make big bucks. Ahead of Raksha Bandhan on August 29, people throng the markets to buy new clothes, rakhis and sweets.

On being asked upon about the business during the rakhi festival, a small vendor named Mukesh in Kamla nagar market, said, “The market is always good for us during the festive season. We are able to make big money.”

Mukesh said the street vendors are working for longer duration, putting up the stall for almost 10 hours a day, as the demand for rakhi is on peak.

The festival of celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters has surely filled the pockets of manufactures and suppliers of rakhi.

However, with the advancement in time and technology, the market for small vendors has shrunk.

“These days, the big manufactures are making rakhis with LED and sometimes even with some songs in them which are proving to be more popular these days” said another rakhi stall owner, Jasbir.

Also, the E-commerce sites now-a-days are flooded with various gift packages and offers to lure customers.
“With the offers of home delivery, and avoiding reckless crowd and travel, people prefer to buy rakhis online rather than coming to the market and purchasing our traditionally handmade rakhis.” Jasbir added.

The small scale manufacturers and sellers have the fear of vanishing in the coming years.

“The increasing trend of online trading has ruptured the market for us” said a Gurgaon based rakhi manufacturer. (KNN/J)
