Erode MSMEs urge govt to set up an agro park in the district

Erode, June 6 (KNN) The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from Erode district in Tamil Nadu, who are mainly from the food processing sector, have urged the government to set up an Agro Park in the district keeping in mind the large market it has for turmeric.

Talking to KNN, Rasumani, General Manager, DIC, Erode, explained that around 20 per cent of the units in Erode are from food processing sector as even a small flour mill comes under the food processing industry.

“Erode will become the hub of food processing units as it is the only market in south India for turmeric,” DIC official said.

“Be it dairy products, masala powders, pastry or traditional snacks, Erode district has hundreds of units from small-scale ones to well-known brands that manufacture these products,” he added.

He said that some value added products can be developed from the turmeric and the land is good for coconut and agriculture.

Since the district has these strengths, the association has appealed to the Union Government to establish an agro-park as a special economic zone in the district. This will give a boost to export of processed food products.

He said that Erode industries Association is requesting Government of India to set an Agro Park here but so far they have not sanctioned.

“Since Erode is a hub for turmeric and agro-based units, there is a good scope for agro-park here,” added the General Manager. (KNN Bureau)
