New Delhi, June 9 (KNN) India needs a dedicated agency on the line of US Department of Defence Office Small Business if MSMEs are to take advantage of the massive investment being planned in the defence sector and which is expected to cross Rupees 25000 crore in 7-8 years, says a FISME consultation paper.

The paper has been released prior to the Seminar on Opportunities for MSMEs in Defence Sector scheduled to be inaugurated by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and also to be addressed by  Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member NITI Aayog and former chief of DRDO.

The high profile seminar is being organized by Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME) on Thursday in New Delhi.

The paper highlights that the US Department of Defence Office Small Business provides a host of support services such as Procurement forecast, Procurement Technical Assistance with subcontracting Plans, liaison between private-sector small businesses and provides a mechanism for backward integration.

The consultation paper prepared by FISME in association with Koan Advisory shares a widely held concern that in spite of having world class design, engineering and production capabilities in India’s advanced sectors such as Auto, Engineering, Electronics, Chemicals, IT& BT etc, Indian industries- especially MSMEs, have neither been able to contribute to India’s defence production efforts nor the defence OEMs/ Defence PSUs could systemically engage it in the defence production supply chains.

The FISME Seminar on Defence is being attended by all major Original Equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Defence PSUs, Ordinance Factories and MSME suppliers.

Besides Air Marshal B.N. Gokhale and Air Marshal Tyagi, the speakers include from top companies in Defence sectors such as Lockheed Martin, Bharat Forge, BEL, Honeywell etc.

After updating the consultation paper based on the deliberations of the Seminar, FISME intends to publish later a Policy Paper on Challenges of Indian MSME participation in the Defence Sector. (KNN/AB)
